As summer approaches, many travellers are planning their next big adventure, with road trips becoming increasingly popular for those seeking freedom and flexibility. The open road offers unparalleled opportunities to discover hidden gems at your own pace.

“Road trips give you a sense of freedom that other types of travel simply can’t match,” explains Harry Anapliotis, CEO of Rental Center Crete, a premier car hire company with nearly 50 years of experience helping travellers explore Crete.

Drawing from decades in the industry, Anapliotis has compiled seven spectacular road trips that deserve a spot on every traveler’s summer bucket list.

    7 Spectacular Road Trips

    1. The Pacific Coast Highway, California, USA

This iconic 655-mile stretch along California’s rugged coastline offers breathtaking ocean views. Starting in San Francisco and ending in San Diego, the journey takes you through coastal towns, redwood forests, and stunning beaches.

Key stops include the Bixby Creek Bridge, Hearst Castle, and Carmel-by-the-Sea. The elephant seal rookery near San Simeon is also a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.

The route is best enjoyed between May and September when fog is less likely to obscure those spectacular views. Allow at least a week to appreciate this mixture of natural beauty and cultural experiences.

    2. The Ring Road, Iceland

Circle the entire island on Route 1, an 828-mile journey showcasing diverse landscapes. This route delivers wonder around every bend, from dramatic waterfalls and black sand beaches to volcanic fields and geothermal areas.

Key highlights include the Golden Circle, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and the charming fishing villages of the East Fjords.

The route typically takes 7-10 days to complete. Summer travel benefits from the midnight sun, giving almost 24 hours of daylight to explore, though be prepared for sudden weather changes – that’s part of the adventure!

    3. The Great Ocean Road, Australia

This 150-mile coastal drive in Victoria takes you past the famous Twelve Apostles limestone stacks, through rainforests, and alongside stunning beaches.

Key stops include Loch Ard Gorge, London Arch, and Cape Otway Lighthouse. The route can be driven in a day, but a three-day itinerary allows time to spot koalas, take beach walks, and enjoy coastal towns. The roads are well-maintained and services are plentiful.

While enjoyable year-round, December to February offers the warmest weather for beach stops.

    4. The Amalfi Coast, Italy

This stunning 50-mile stretch along Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula connects picturesque towns built into cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Highlights include the colourful houses of Positano, the historical sites of Ravello, and the beautiful gardens of Villa Cimbrone.

This route is best enjoyed over 3-5 days to savor local cuisine and explore each town. The roads are narrow and winding, but the views are spectacular. Consider visiting in May, June, or September to avoid peak tourist crowds while still enjoying warm weather.

    5. The Garden Route, South Africa

Stretching approximately 190 miles from Mossel Bay to Storms River, this route showcases South Africa’s diverse ecosystems – forests, lagoons, mountains, and beaches. Wildlife spotting opportunities abound, with possibilities to see whales, dolphins, and even elephants.

Must-visit stops include Knysna’s stunning lagoon, the suspension bridges of Tsitsikamma National Park, and the ostrich farms near Oudtshoorn.

Plan for at least 5 days to enjoy this route properly. Pleasant year-round, with whale watching from June to November.

    6. The North Coast 500, Scotland

Often described as Scotland’s answer to Route 66, this 516-mile circular route starts and ends at Inverness Castle, taking in the northern Highlands’ stunning coastlines. Expect dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, mystical castles, and quaint fishing villages.

Highlights include Dunrobin Castle, the beaches of Durness, and Applecross, reached via the thrilling Bealach na Bà pass.

Allow 5-7 days to complete without rushing. The summer months of June to August offer the best weather and longest daylight hours, though book accommodation well in advance during this peak season.

    7. The Romantic Road, Germany

Following a medieval trade route, this 220-mile journey through Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg takes travellers through historic walled towns and past fairy-tale castles.

Don’t miss Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s medieval charm, the stunning Neuschwanstein Castle that inspired Disney, and the beautiful walled city of Dinkelsbühl.

A 5-day itinerary allows time to soak in the history and culture. The roads are excellently maintained and well-signposted, making it perfect for first-time European road-trippers. Summer brings festivals and outdoor dining opportunities in many towns along the way.

Harry Anapliotis, CEO of Rental Center Crete, commented:

“Road trips offer a special kind of freedom that’s hard to find elsewhere. After decades in the car rental industry, I’ve seen how a good road trip can transform a regular holiday into an unforgettable adventure.

“For summer journeys, aim for late May to early June or September to avoid crowds while still enjoying pleasant weather. Research road conditions in advance, especially for routes like Iceland or Scotland where the weather changes quickly. Look beyond tourist hotspots for accommodations and meals – often, the most authentic experiences are found just a few miles away at lower prices.”
